The XU Standard

What every XU object must earn before it carries our name

XU handbags will not all look alike.

One may begin with the form of a historical object, while another may begin with a material, a construction method, or an idea. The silhouette may change, the hardware may change, the surface may change, and the way the object is carried may change with it.

What should remain consistent is the standard behind the object.

For XU, design begins with understanding before interpretation. We study the history, form, function, material, and context of a source before deciding what deserves to continue into something new. The historical reference should influence the object itself rather than becoming decoration applied after the design is complete.

The same expectation continues into construction.

Materials are selected for what the object requires rather than for the prestige of a label alone. Load bearing areas, handles, closures, hardware, bases, seams, edges, linings, and hidden components are considered as parts of the same handbag. Hardware is expected to function as deliberately as it looks, while stitching and reinforcement are chosen according to the structural demands of the design.

We believe the parts someone rarely sees deserve the same attention as the parts everyone notices.

We also expect a handbag to participate in a life. Leather may soften, surfaces may change, and years of use may eventually become visible. We do not consider remaining permanently untouched to be the only definition of longevity.

What we do expect is structural integrity.

Every XU handbag is intended to be inspected against the specifications established for that design before it leaves us. As XU develops new objects, those specifications may change because different constructions require different solutions, but the expectation will remain the same: we should be able to explain why something is there, how it is supposed to function, and why it deserves to remain.

That is the XU standard.

It is not a claim that an object will never change.

It is our commitment to taking responsibility for the decisions we made before it reached you.
